Free Electron Laser Operation in the Whistler Mode
The introduction of a strongly magnetized plasma in the inner region of a Free Electron Laser opens up the possibility of generating coherent radiation in the slow whistler mode using mildly relativistic electron beams. The frequency of emission, however, is limited to below the electron cyclotron frequency. The efficiency of the device can be enhanced by tapering the guide magnetic field.
متن کاملElectron scattering in ethene: Excitation of the ã B1u state, elastic scattering, and vibrational excitation
Experimental and calculated absolute differential cross sections for the scattering of low-energy electrons from ethene are presented. Emphasis is on the excitation of the ã B1u 3 , state, but selected elastic and vibrational excitation cross sections are also given. In contrast to earlier calculations, which were nearly a factor of 2 too large, the present calculation agrees very well with the...
متن کاملIo: an intense brightening near 5 micrometers.
Spectrophotometric observations of the jovian satellite Io on 20 and 21 February 1978 (Universal Time) were made from 1.2 to 5.4 micrometers. Io's brightness at 4.7 to 5.4 micrometers was found to be three to five times greater at an orbital phase angle of 68 degrees than at orbital phase angles of 23 degrees (5.5 hours before the brightening) and 240 degrees (20 hours after the brightening). S...
متن کاملElectrostatic and whistler instabilities excited by an electron beam
The electron beam-plasma system is ubiquitous in the space plasma environment. Here, using a Darwin particle-in-cell method, the excitation of electrostatic and whistler instabilities by a gyrating electron beam is studied in support of recent laboratory experiments. It is assumed that the total plasma frequency (xpe) is larger than the electron cyclotron frequency (Xe). The fast-growing electr...
متن کاملAngle Diffusion Due to Electron - Whistler Interactions during Disturbed Times
During periods of increased magnetospheric activity , whistler wave emissions have been observed with increased wave amplitudes. We consider a pitch angle diffusion mechanism that is shown to scale with whistler wave amplitude and hence is 'switched on' during these periods of intense activity. We consider the interaction between relativistic electrons and two oppositely directed, parallel prop...
